Similar to how orthodontics repositions teeth, surgical orthodontics or orthognathic surgery is a form of dental surgery to correct severe jaw abnormalities such as bad bite, bone irregularities, or malocclusion. Most patients undergo an initial period of orthodontic treatment to align the teeth so that they will fit properly and look healthy after surgery is complete. Surgical orthodontics fixes abnormalities and improves the patient’s ability to chew, speak, and breath. WHEN MIGHT SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS BE NEEDED?
Surgical orthodontic treatment will only be considered for adult patients who are finished developing. – orthognathic surgery is not for children who are still growing. Jaw growth is typically complete by age 16 in females and 18 in males. Surgical orthodontics can correct improper bites, protruding or retruding chin, and other facial aesthetic concerns. After surgery is complete, braces are usually applied to the teeth.
HOW DOES ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY WORK?
The surgery is performed in a hospital by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and may take several hours depending on the severity of each individual case. When the surgery is complete, you will have about two weeks to rest and recover. After 4-8 weeks of healing time, your orthodontist will make slight adjustments in your treatment to perfect your bite. Most braces are removed within six to twelve months following orthognathic surgery. After braces are removed, a retainer will be fitted to help your teeth maintain their new positions.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY?
Just like any common surgery, there are inherent risks of undergoing orthognathic surgery. However, orthodontic procedures are not new and have been performed in hospitals and offices on a regular basis for many years.
