WHY KIDS NEED DENTAL CARE EARLY AND OFTEN
Proper dental care should start with the eruption of the first tooth. That's why children should visit the dentist by their first birthday by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting. However, one in six parents mistakenly believe that kids don't need to go to the dentist until they reach age four or older. This misconception is part of the reason one in five kids ages 5 to 11 have at least one untreated decayed tooth.
If you wait too long to start taking your child to the dentist, cavities and other dental problems may have already set in, making it more challenging to treat issues quickly and effectively. Taking your child to the dentist fulfills three key needs for oral health.
1. Preventative Care
A basic level of preventative care such as dental cleanings and checkups is necessary to make sure your child's teeth are developing in a healthy manner. Regularly visiting the dentist means any issues beginning to occur can be treated promptly. For example, you might believe your child is brushing and flossing adequately only for the dentist to find cavities. Our pediatric dental specialists review your child's nutrition, genetic and oral habits to address any issues and prevent dental problems in the future.
As kids get older, their teeth may develop problems like misalignment, crowding or significant bite problems. Your pediatric dentist can identify these issues in their earliest stages so you can ensure your child receives the appropriate orthodontic intervention.
2. Exposure
For optimal lifetime health, your child will need to have regular dental visits. These regular visits during childhood help kids get used to the dentist and see it as a positive part of a healthy lifestyle. Our pediatric dental specialists have the skills to make your child's visit more comfortable and fun, therefore eliminating the anxiety that can sometimes be associated with dental visits.
3. Education
Both parents and kids need guidance on how to achieve optimal oral health. Your child's dentist can help you with simple things like tips for better tooth brushing as well as explain more complicated concepts like nutritional or mouth habits that may be affecting your child's dental health. For example, your pediatric dentist can explain the different types of preventative tooth sealants you can choose to help keep cavities at bay.
